Following meetings of the South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group on 24th July and 10 September, and meetings on 12 July and 29th August of a committee established to plan for a demonstration, a decision has been made for a 3 day march from Sheffield to Lindholme Detention Centre, via Rotherham and Doncaster ending with a demonstration outside Lindholme.

Our key demands are:

Peoples rights to work
Seeking asylum is not a crime

 

We are appealing to people to come forward and assist with the tasks needed to build an effective demonstration. Please place your name and contact number/email in a mail, and send it to us at the contact address on the contact page. Stating which one or more of the following you think you can assist with in any way, big or small.

  • Community Groups
  • Trade Union & Campaign Groups
  • Churches & Faith Groups
  • Colleges & Universities
  • Events

 

Media

  • Create a list of contacts and liaise with media
  • Create press releases, ensure maximum coverage of demo and issues.
  • Documents stories regarding human rights abuses here (destitution, detention, Home Office) and in countries of origin

Community Groups

  • Alert all community groups about the march
  • Invite participation, and contributions
  • Seek assistance in areas we march through – accommodation, refreshments, food, solidarity.
  • People in exile have led the planning - we need translation of demands, and date of march in different languages.

Trade Union, Campaigning and Political groups

  • Contact unions, ask to speak at local meetings.
  • Raise donations, invite participation.
  • Link to Strangers into Citizens, Anti-deportation groups, Schools Against Deportation etc.

Churches & Faith Groups

  • Invite participation.
  • Solidarity along the route (accommodation, refreshments etc).

Colleges & Universities

  • Leaflet at freshers week, approach Students Unions and societies get students onto the march.

Events

  • Setting up events in Sheffield/Rotherham/Doncaster/Lindholme – getting public speakers, PA systems, audio and visual equipment, music events, showing films.

The progress made in each of these will be discussed at the next meeting of South Yorkshire Migrant and Asylum Action Group, Wednesday 3rd October, 7pm at Scotia Works, Leadmill Road, Sheffield (5 minutes from train and bus stations).

 

Other Notes:

Legal Advice: We are seeking anyone who can provide legal advice to come forward.

Media Training: For anyone interested in learning more about approaching the press and media about these issues, please come along to the workshop: Introduction to Media, 10am , Northern Refugee Centre, Scotia Works, S1 and contact sarah.eldridge@nrcentre.org.uk.

A draft letter to the Trade Unions, Faith Groups, and Community Groups etc will be prepared and circulated by Friday 21 September for comment.
